AbstractComposites of seasonal rainfall terciles observed at 70 stations during the 8 most significant El Niño and La Niña events between 1950/51 and 1998 were used to characterize the typical ENSO impact in Southern Brazil, using 3x2 contingency tables. The hypergeometric distribution was used to evaluate the probabilities of below-normal and above-normal seasonal rainfall associated with El Niño and La Niña events. It was found that El Niño extreme events were associated with above-normal rainfall during all the year, mainly in Autumn and Austral Spring, with more than 35 of the 70 accounted stations significantly impacted at 90% probability level. La Niña extreme events were significantly associated with below-normal rainfall only in spring. There is a remarkable asymmetry between the historical rainfall response to El Niño and La Niña events concerning the area and season(s) of influence. This study emphasizes the probabilistic response instead of the composite response of rainfall to ENSO extreme events. The high ENSO previsibility and its significant impact in the region provide a significant source of previsibility, in probabilistic terms, of the seasonal rainfall anomalies compared to the climatology.
